Mother-in-Law is very proud of the herd of these purple flowers that she nurtures in pots in her tropical Scottish garden. Luckily she did not excommunicate me from the clan when I asked if they weren't a kind of onion and mentioned that they grow as weeds in Japan.

They're pretty much weeds here in northern California too, but people do cultivate them.

Considering your fine aesthetic sense, it's a shame you do not appreciate these wonderful Agapanthus plants, which form a structural element in many a British garden.

It could even be said that the spread and popularity of this particular genome is evidence of "survival of the fittest" as Wikipedia tells me it is appreciated as art worldwide.
