Disconcertingly, this was moving from left to right. So, it seems there is an evolutionary advantage to dressing strangely and giving the impression that you keep your brains in your bum. That must be the explanation for modern celebrity culture ....and I suppose it makes me the bug paparazzi.

The dorsal horn and size indicate a Hawk Moth (Sphingdae) maybe Hippotion rosetta
Close guess, but googling suggests it is more likely Theretra oldenlandiae (which I got through a page with someone else suggesting your answer, so thanks!).
I knew I'd seen a caterpillar like it before - T. oldenlandiae looks a good match.
It was probably looking for somewhere to pupate.
