Oops! And what's worse, it was not just a cheap computer keyboard, but the keyboard of my fairly new Macbook Air. But apart from the shift key locking on, it seemed to recover ok, so hopefully it won't be too painful to fix.

In Eli's younger and poorer days, he would pull the keyboard and try some tuner cleaner. Today, just replace the thing.
If it was older and less valuable I'd be more tempted to have a go myself - we have changed components in various other computers in the past. But google suggests the keyboard is fairly inaccessible and with such a new machine it seems best just to pay up than risk ending up with a heap of components on the floor.
