So, we got back home, a whole hour late. This story suggests the train problems were close to Tokyo but we went straight across with no problems. Obviously, we "dodged the bullet" (as they say in bizarrely ill-informed places like Washington) as far as the typhoon went. In fact by staying just outside its range we had spectacularly good weather while everyone at home got soaked :-)
