Japanese life expectancy climbs for both women and men

Hot on the heels of the doctor shortage...life expectancy climbs for Japanese women and men.

As the report mentions, eating habits are getting worse. But smoking rates are also falling.

One number that always struck me, and for all I know is an urban legend, is that it took until ~1900 before going to a quack actually improved your chances of surviving rather than decreasing them. Perhaps this is still going on in Japan?

Well they are certainly doing something right in terms of overall health (and it appears that it is not just longevity, but mobility and independence too). Mind you, I'm not sure I'd want too long a life if it had to be on a 100% Japanese diet...

I also recommend looking at the RAND experiment.
