The observant (look right!), and/or well-read, will have already noticed...I was honoured that John Nielsen-Gammon has passed on the Woody Guthrie Award for a Thinking Blogger to me. It's had an illustrious history, passing through the hands of a number of the more thoughtful and interesting climate-related bloggers over the last couple of years. John has the lineage here.
I'm open to suggestions as to who to pass it on to.

Sorry, James, I didn't expect pushback. BTW, Joe Romm was one of the bloggers who failed my honesty test.

ReplyDeleteA lot of this misunderstanding is a result of the disneyification of Woodie Guthrie. Guthrie grew up in the middle of the worst environmental disaster the US has ever had and was one of the internal refugees that resulted. Woodie and the Okies were not welcome elsewhere

Congratulations on the award, which I’d never heard of. I once got into a dispute on a sceptic blog where I (a middle class Limey lefty) defended Guthrie against a Teaparty-supporting sceptic for whom Woody was just a typical unwashed commy hippy. (Oh well, This Land was His Land, not mine).
ReplyDeleteOn the question of who to pass it on to, may I propose Ben Pile of Climate Resistance? He’s quite anti-fascist, and even anti-proto-fascist. I note that the award announcement reproduces Woody’s famous slogan “this machine kills fascists”. I understand that “kills” is to be understood metaphorically. But what kind of fascists are you opposing here?

John, Woodie was a songwriter and an activist who wanted to bring people to protest and fight against injustice. You think he never exaggerated a bit.

ReplyDeleteActually this sounds spineless as well as dishonest. Personally, I think climate science could do without highlighting that sort of behavior as the exemplar for everybody else to live up to.
