I recall "Travels with Charlie" by Steinbeck, where he fulminates against all the silly "This toilet seat has been sterilised for your convenience" (And covered with plastic film you have to rip off) then spreading across the USA in the 50's. Or maybe it goes back further. <br />It feels a bit like a cross between happy techno-optimism, salesmanship and simple awe. "Hey, we can do this! Isn't it great!"<br />Which is I suppose very American.
